Deer Close

Coniston

Set on six acres of private lakeside land in Coniston, Deer Close occupies a plot with genuine history.

Once the gardener's cottage for neighbouring The Heald, the estate that Arthur Ransome called home, the site carries a story that runs as deep as the lake itself. With 200 metres of frontage, a private jetty and natural woodland, it's a rare kind of setting.

What we did

The four-bedroom Passivhaus, designed by HM Architecture and built in 2019, puts that landscape at the centre of everything. Broad windows, open terraces and reverse-level living mean Coniston is always in view and always in mind. Low-energy credentials come as standard, with an air source heat pump, solar panels and mechanical heat recovery ventilation throughout.

The main house, garage and grounds have been transformed into a space that holds its own on the world stage while feeling entirely of this place. Part private retreat, part exclusive hire venue, the finished interior draws on the great alpine chalets of Europe and North America. Warm, considered and quietly luxurious, with spa facilities and spaces designed to draw people in, Deer Close is a Lake District retreat that genuinely stands apart.
